Jesus Christ - The Son of Man and the Mission

Scripture Reading:  Philippians 2:5 - 11

Memory Verse:  John 20:21

Introduction: In our previous study, we studied the parable in Luke 14:16 - 35 concerning the one who made a great supper and bade many to attend.  That teaching relates to the ministry of Christ, and reveals the flimsy excuses used by many to refuse to receive Gods invitation to salvation sent through Christ Jesus.

We are also faced with our own flimsy excuses for not taking up our cross daily and following Him. We were then reminded of our responsibility to invite others to come to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, by inviting them to come to Christ Jesus - to be Born Again (John 3:7), the only means by which one can gain access to that great celebration, (Revelation 19:7-8) to be held when all the people of God, those who have been Born Again are received into Heaven at the resurrection.

In this session, we examine the Mission of the Son of Man, Jesus Christ, to earth, and relate our lives to His life.  After all, it is His life that is supposed to be made manifest in our lives after we are Born Again.

I.          In Philippians 2:5 we are commanded: ALet this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.

1.         In your own words, express your understanding of the mind of Christ as revealed in Philippians 2:5 - 11?

2.         What did Christ Jesus do that demonstrated His mind set?

3.         How does John 4:34; John 6:38; John 19:30 and Luke 22:42 speak to the mindset of the Lord Jesus Christ in His completion of His Mission
 to earth?

II.        Philippians 2:6 - 8 reads as follows in the Amplified Bible.

'Who, although being essentially one with God, in the form of God [possessing the fullness of the attributes which make God], did not think this equality with God was a thing to be eagerly grasped or retained; but stripped Himself [of all privileges and rightful dignity] so as to assume the guise of a servant (slave), in that He became like men and was born a human being.  And after He had appeared in human form, He abased and humbled Himself [still further] and carried His obedience to the extreme of death, even the death of [the] cross.

1.         In light of the scriptures above, list everything you can think of that Jesus laid aside, laid down, or gave up in order to fulfill the mission that
 God the Father, gave Him.

2.         Now, list everything that you can think of that you have given up in order to fulfill the mission that God the Father has assigned to you as a
 Believer.

3.         In what way did Jesus limit Himself as a man?  (See Matthew 24 for a clue).

     (1) How did this limitation on Himself affect His humanity?

4.         In what way did Christ Jesus not limit Himself as a man?

5.         What did Jesus have available to Him in His ministry, that you do not have available to you?

6.         Have you determined the specific call of God on your life, your assigned mission, your specific ministry?  If so, what do you discern it to
 be?

7.         Are you performing the mission and ministry that has been assigned to you?

8.         In your own words, paraphrase Matthew 5:13.

9.         In your own words, paraphrase Matthew 5:14.

10.       In your own words, describe your understanding of Matthew 5:16.

Conclusion: The goal of discipleship is just that - - Discipleship!
