The Holy Spirit -  (His Work)

I.    The Primary Ministry of the Holy Spirit to the Unbeliever.

1.    In John 16:7 – 11 Jesus explained the ministry of the Holy Spirit as follows:

(1)     John 16:8 reveals He will not only convict men of their sinfulness, but also their need for a savior - Jesus, The Christ, and of the judgment to come.

(2)    John 16:9 reveals  He will convict men for their failure to believe in and trust on Jesus!

(3)    John 16:10 reveals he will convince sinful man of the innocence, the righteousness and holiness of Jesus Christ.

(4)     John 16:11reveals that He will convict men that they, (sinful men) and the entire sin cursed, sin
darkened world and Satan are under the judgment of God.

2. John 6:44 reveals that no individual can come to Christ, be "Born Again," until the Holy Spirit convicts them of their sinful condition and their need of a Savior and draws them to Jesus. Therefore it is necessary for Believers to witness verbally and in lifestyle to unbelievers concerning the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

3. Acts 1:8 and Romans 10:9 – 17 reveals that the Believers part in cooperating with the Holy Spirit in bringing a lost person to Christ is (1) Lifestyle evangelism and (2) Verbal Testimony and Witnessing.

4. John 6:37 reveals that Jesus has promised to receive everyone  the Holy Spirit draws to Him.

5. Yes! as Believers, we are given the duty and privilege of being used by the Holy Spirit to in reaching unbelievers through our lifestyle and verbal testimony.

6. Matthew 28:19 – 20 reveals that we are commanded to witness to the unsaved! It is a command! Missions is the mission of the Church - both individually and collectively.

7. The Believers role in winning the lost is to daily, moment by moment, submit themselves to the leadership of the Holy Spirit, both in lifestyle and when led to do so, to witness to others for Christ.

II.    As to the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Believer

1. John 14:15 – 17 reveals that the Holy Spirit comes to indwelt the Believer at the moment of salvation.

2. John 14:26 reveals that the Holy Spirit will illumine us and teach us the things of God.

3. John 16:12 – 15 In these verses Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would guide the Believer into all truth, and that He would not glorify Himself, but would glorify the Lord Jesus Christ.

4. The promise in John 16:12 – 15 means that, as I give myself to the study of, contemplation of, and meditation on the word of God, that the Holy Spirit will reveal truth to me and He uses others in that processas well.

5. Romans 8:16 assures us that if we are truly "Born Again" that the Holy Spirit will ensure us of that reality by his witness within our spirits. He will bear witness with our spirit that we are "Born Again".

(1) You were to knowledge if you have this witness of the Holy Spirit with your spirit.

6. Romans 8:14 assures us that if we are truly "Born Again" the Holy Spirit will lead and guide us in our everyday decisions of life.

7. A variety of ministries of the Holy Spirit are contained in first Corinthians 12:1 – 13.  You are to identify them and explain your understanding of them.

(1) "The word of wisdom" - Holy Spirit given wisdom into affairs of life, both spiritual/secular, and the ability to communicate that wisdom. (1Cor 12:8)

(2) "The word of knowledge" - A knowledge, insight and understanding of things primarily spiritual and the ability to communicate that insight and knowledge in either a general or specific situation. (1Cor 12:8)

(3) "Faith" of a type that trusts in, and believes in the word of God, in Jesus Christ as demonstrated by its implementation in the life of the individual to the overcoming of obstacles that at times seem, in the natural, to be insurmountable! (1 Cor 12:9)

(4) "Gifts of healing" - The supernatural, Holy Spirit empowered ability, through the anointing of the Holy Spirit to alleviate human suffering through healing. (1 Cor 12:9)

(5) "Miracles" - The supernatural, Holy Spirit empowered ability, through the anointing of the Holy Spirit, to cause supernatural acts/events to occur. (1 Cor 12:10)

(6) "Prophecy" - The Holy Spirit empowered ability to (1) foretell future events and (2) to preach and to teach the word of God. It should be noted here that in the "foretelling" of an event, if that event does not occur as prophesied, then it was a false prophecy and the person rendering the prophecy may well be a false prophet. In the forth-telling, "preaching and teaching" of the word of God, should be predicated on the word of God and judged accordingly by the word of God.(1 Cor 12:10)

(7) "Discerning of Spirits" - Holy Spirit anointed ability to discern what spirits are present and operating in a given situation or environment. (1 Cor 12:10)

         (8) "Tongues" - If we are going to use the biblical example, we must restrict tongues to the Holy Spirit anointing to speak languages or a
language in which a person has never been trained. This type of tongues is separate and apart from "prayer/praise" expressions that are known
only to God. There is in scripture the "ecstatic utterance" which occurred between the individual and God, and was not proper for the
        corporate congregation. (1 Cor 12:10)

        (9) "Interpretation of tongues" - The Holy Spirit anointed ability to interpret languages in which a person has no understanding in practice or
       experience. (1 Cor 12:10)

8. You were to state your understanding of the "Baptism of the Holy Spirit", and what you think is the best evidence that one has received the "Baptism of the Holy Spirit".

(1)    A Believer is to live a "Spirit Filled Life" (Eph5:18).  That is to be the "Normal Christian life". The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is an anointing to live such a life and for ministry as empowered by the Holy Spirit.

(2)    The"best evidence" that one has received the "Baptism of the Holy Spirit" is a Spirit empowered life of faith, joy, peace, and an anointing for ministry above and beyond that which is normally encountered

9. Ephesians 5:18 (once again) is the day-to-day condition that each Believer is to live, in which they live a life of repentance and holiness. The "filling of the Spirit" occurs as the Believer lives a life in which they are continually keeping the sins confessed up to date.
